Max Verstappen provided the perfect illustration on Friday of why Ferrari were interested in him before his rapid promotion to Red Bull – while the Italian team offered another example of why the 18-year-old thought it best to stay with the drinks giant.
Verstappen was just 10 the last time Ferrari won a title, and on the evidence of practice here in Barcelona they are unlikely to end their poor run this year. The Belgian had been on Ferrari’s radar until he elected to stick with Red Bull, with Daniil Kvyat making way.
