Shooting of man by police in Tennessee under investigation

BOLIVAR, Tenn. — A man who fired a gun at corrections officers outside a west Tennessee jail was fatally shot by police on Wednesday, authorities said.

Andra Devon Murphy, 43, died after he was shot by Bolivar Police Department officers outside the Hardeman County Criminal Justice Complex, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Keli McAlister said.

Corrections officers were outside the complex, which is located in Bolivar and includes the county’s jail and sheriff’s offices, when Murphy fired shots at them just before 6 a.m., McAlister said.

Murphy drove away from the complex, but he later returned and exited his car with a gun, McAlister said. Murphy then confronted Bolivar police officers, who shot him, she said.

Murphy, of Toone, died at a hospital, McAlister said. No officers were injured.

It was not immediately clear how many officers fired at Murphy. TBI agents were still investigating the shooting. The local district attorney will decide whether to charge the officers after the TBI finishes its investigation.

Bolivar is about 70 miles (112 kilometers) east of Memphis.
