McLaren goes topless with the new 12C Spider

When the McLaren MP4-12C hit auto shows in 2010 and showrooms in 2011, it was a love it or hate it supercar. Many hated the car's minimalist design and sharp cuts. Others loved the car's dedication to speed and pure power. Over time, the car has gained a reputation as one of the premier supercars to own.

Now it's going topless.

McLaren goes topless with the new 12C Spider

McLaren has announced the 12C Spider, an open-top version of the MP4-12C. The car was introduced in a video interview with Jenson Button, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Racing driver in Formula 1. Button says the car is everything you can want from a street legal racer, but with the addition of being open to the elements as you scream down the roadway.

The 12C Spider is based on the same stiff carbon fiber MonoCell chassis as the MP4-12C. It also shares its powerful powertrain, including the 625PS twin-turbo V8 engine.

McLaren has promised more information on the 12C Spider once it's released for order in the next few days. Expect it to begin hitting showrooms in McLaren's exclusive network of dealerships next week.

Update 7/3/2012- Photos released along with more details. The 12C Spider has a top speed of 204mph and a price tag of $268,250.
