Tourists flock to ‘most beautiful’ abandoned rail line in Tottori
KURAYOSHI, Tottori Prefecture--Nearly 40 years after its closure, the Kurayoshi Line here is drawing tourists and winning praise on social media as Japan’s “most beautiful abandoned railway track.”
The line, operated for decades by Japanese National Railways (JNR), now attracts more than 10,000 visitors a year.
The Kurayoshi Line opened in 1912. JNR, which was split up and privatized in 1987, had planned to extend the line across the Chugoku Mountains to Okayama Prefecture.
But the line was discontinued in 1985 because of declining passenger numbers.
Train platforms, bridges and other structures remain in some sections of the abandoned line.
The most popular spot is a section where bamboo groves line both sides of the tracks. Some bamboo trees are growing between the rails.
