Wichita woman pleads guilty to running over, shooting man
WICHITA, Kan. — A Wichita woman who was scheduled to go on trial Monday in the death of a man who she ran over and then shot has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Charity Blackmon, 32, was originally charged with first-degree murder in the death of 54-year-old Merrill Rabus. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said she pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree intentional murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Police say Blackmon hit bicyclist Rabus with her van in east Wichita in March of 2021. They say she then got out of her van and shot him, before driving from the scene, KSNW-TV reported.
Police said witnesses followed Blackmon and she was arrested a short time later.
She was released on bond after she was charged but has been in jail since September after she violated her bond by traveling to Newkirk, Oklahoma, prosecutors said.
Blackmon is scheduled to be sentenced May 9.
