Gennady Golovkin claims he missed out on a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics after an official told him in advance that Kazakhstan would win only one title at the Games – and that the lone champion would not be him.

Speaking days after the boxing programme in Rio was overshadowed by judging controversies, Golovkin says he is sure he won the 2004 middleweight final against Russia’s Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov but was awarded silver instead in line with a pre-arranged plan.
