Man found guilty in shooting death of St. Louis

CLAYTON, Mo. — A 29-year-old man has been found guilty of second-degree murder and other crimes in the 2019 shooting death of a suburban St. Louis police officer.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatchreports that a St. Louis County jury on Friday rejected the self-defense claim by Bonette K. Meeks in the death of Officer Michael Langsdorf.

The shooting happened in June 2019 at a food market in Wellston. Meeks admitted in testimony to trying to cash a check worth nearly $6,800 that didn’t belong to him. He said he didn’t know someone had contacted police, and didn’t know that Langsdorf was there was arrest him. Langsdorf worked for the North County Police Cooperative.

Meeks said he shot Langsdorf while “trying to protect myself.”
