Valtteri Bottas takes pole as Lewis Hamilton starts in eighth following five
Lewis Hamilton admits tomorrow's Austrian Grand Prix will be an exercise in damage limitation as he starts a lowly eighth, having been hit with a grid penalty.
His Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas proved there was more to Formula One than the fervour surrounding title rivals Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel as he secured pole position at the Red Bull Ring.
Bottas sealed just his second pole in F1 and will lead off from the front with Hamilton down in eighth after a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.
Knowing he would be relegated down the grid, the British driver could only manage the third-fastest time in Q3, with Vettel – 14 points ahead of Hamilton at the top of the drivers’ championship – starting on the front row alongside Bottas.
It would appear that some tension lingers between the championship leaders after Hamilton snubbed an on-camera handshake with the German, although the pair previously shook hands after qualifying.
The two main title protagonists headed to the Styrian mountains fresh from the controversial Azerbaijan Grand Prix a fortnight ago.
